A Prayer for You

It’s always nice to hear “I’ll pray for you.” To be told by a good friend — or even someone who’s pretty much a stranger — “You’re in my prayers.” In today’s first reading, St. Paul (whether we feel we know him well or hardly at all) is saying just that: “We always pray for you.” Yes, his letter is addressed to the community in Thessalonica but certainly it’s for all those who follow Christ.

And just what is his prayer for you on Aug. 23, 2010? “That our God may make you worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose and every effort of faith, that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him.” Amen to that!

Prayer: Today, heavenly Father, I want to do what You want me to do.
