Create a clean heart in me, O God. — Psalm 51:12

Mass Readings: Jeremiah 31:31-34 / Matthew 16:13-23

Faith is ‘Custom-made’

I have a hard time expressing my faith in my own words. Peter’s phrasing in today’s Gospel — “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” — isn’t one I would ever come up with. I believe that; it’s just that I wouldn’t say it that way. So how would I say it? How do you say it?

We have to spend some time to stop and find the right words. To pray about it. To listen to what Christ teaches. (No doubt Peter did all that, and more.) Yes, we can get a better understanding of what faith is from what others have said, and how they’ve lived their beliefs, but my gift of faith — the relationship I have with my heavenly Father — is like no one else’s. And yours was “custom-made,” too. Just for you.

Prayer: Lord of Light, on our path of conversion, lead us to Your truth.
