June 3, St . Charles Lwanga / companions

Teach me your way, O Lord. — Psalm 25:4

Mass Readings: 2 Timothy 2:8-15 / Mark 12:28-34

Holy Heroes

Today’s memorial Mass venerates St. Charles Lwanga and his companions who were martyred in Uganda, Africa , in 1886 while protecting young boys from the wicked King Mwanga, a pedophile. The executioner’s own son was the first to die at the hand of his father. Though unnamed, these saints shed their blood and that act allows the rest of us to tap into the mercy of God through these brave souls’ intercession.

We still have unknown heroes walking the earth who give up their lives, not through blood but rather, a little piece at a time. Many successful men are able to accomplish great public deeds because their wives support them with prayers and sacrifices behind the scenes. Priests carry out their duties while office workers and volunteers keep things running smoothly.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, bless those who help me; even Your servants whom I don’t know.
