In winter, my job required me to start to drive to work in darkness. Once out on the highway, on mornings without a moon, the world appeared flat, two-dimensional. Only those things in my headlights seemed to have depth. Dawn came, then sunrise. I watched things gradually become three-dimensional. Driving in the light was better than driving in the dark.
Nicodemus first came to Jesus at night. In John's Gospel, darkness and night are symbols of unbelief, while light and day are symbols of belief. Early on, Nicodemus does not recognize Jesus as Light of the world. At Jesus' burial (Jn 19:39), Nicodemus comes into the light of day and shows that he is one who ''lives the truth'' and ''comes to the light, so that his works might be clearly seen as done in God'' (Jn 3:21).
Prayer: Lord Jesus, help us walk in the brightness of Your light.
