March 20, Saturday Lenten Weekday

O Lord, my God, in you I take refuge.--Psalm 7:2

Mass readings: Jeremiah 11:18-20 / John 7:40-53

Speaking Like Him

Jesus' speaking got mixed reviews from the people of His day. Some believed He was the Messiah, while others questioned and doubted. The temple officials asked the guards why they didn't deliver Jesus to them when His speaking caused dissension among the crowds. The guards simply answered, ''Never before has anyone spoken like this one'' (Jn 7:46).

I received it as a great compliment when my friend, Helen, commented, ''Deb, I haven't met anyone like you, in that you talk about God without sentimentality in an open, comfortable way. Not only that, you talk about what God has done in your life unashamedly.'' Of course, that's easier to do with a like-minded friend who shares my beliefs. I admit I'm less open with those who differ from me. How willing am I to risk controversy?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, may we be faithful to You, the Truth, in our speech.
