In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord.-- Psalm 138:1
Mass readings: Isaiah 6:1-2,3-8 / 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 or 15:3-8,11 / Luke 5:1-11
I wonder how often pride and stubbornness get in the way of our lives. In today's Gospel, I see Peter's quick conversion as the result of human pride being overcome. Imagine an entire day without a single fish caught. Peter's exhausted, smelly and tired, and then he's being told to try it all over again. This professional fisherman, fully competent and self-assured, is being advised by . . . a carpenter. (Like a first grader telling me, a former accountant, how to balance my checkbook!)
In Peter's situation, this pride and hardheadedness magnify the beauty of his relationship with Our Lord. Throughout the Gospel, we see him constantly battle his pride, and stubbornness. His weaknesses and human tendencies conquered, Peter becomes our foundation.
Prayer: Lord, help me see how my ego interferes with my true self.
