Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.-- Psalm 51:(see 3)
Mass readings: 2 Samuel 11:1-4,5-10,13-17 / Mark 4:26-34
In Scripture, David is described as ''a man after God's own heart'' (1 Sam 13:14) but in today's first reading, he certainly isn't acting like it! In fact, he's falling far short of his call as he lets his passions lead him deeper into sin to arrange for the death of Uriah the Hittite. Still, God forgave David and continued to use him in a mighty way.
There have been times in my life when I felt that I had committed the unforgivable sin. Maybe you have felt the same way too. David is also the one who cried out ''Create in me a clean heart . . . and put a right spirit within me'' (Ps 51:10). We too can cry out to the Lord, assured that He will heal us from our sins.
Prayer: Lord, cover me in Your mercy and love even when I fall.
