January 1, Solemnity of the Mother of God

May God bless us in his mercy.--Psalm 67:2

Mass readings: Numbers 6:22-27 / Galatians 4:4-7 / Luke 2:16-21

Your Father's Hopes

The Church in her wisdom celebrates the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, on the first day of each year. Today's Gospel shows us why as we catch a glimpse of the life of the Holy Family during those first days of Jesus' life. As new parents, Joseph and Mary must have been filled with joyful anticipation of all that lay ahead for their new family. I can still remember those early days with my own daughter and all the expectations I held in my heart.

As you begin a new year with expectations of your own, remember that your Heavenly Father holds similar hopes and dreams in His heart for you. Remember that no matter what's going on in your life, as God's child you never face the future alone.

Prayer: Father, take my hand and guide me through the year to come.
