Justice shall flourish in His time, and fullness of peace forever.--Psalm 72:(see 7)
Mass readings: Isaiah 11:1-10 / Luke 10:21-24
''If you want peace, work for justice.'' Pope Paul VI spoke these words as an exhortation for the faithful to realize that peace is not a passive but an active virtue. In Advent we prepare ourselves for the arrival of the Prince of Peace. But the peace that Jesus brings, exemplified in the idyllic words of Isaiah, can only be obtained by our active participation in the enterprise of justice. This is not some grand plan, but rather has been revealed to the merest children.
Peace is possible when we actively do what is necessary to make justice reign in our world. A popular Christian hymn captures the message of today's readings: ''Peace is flowing like a river, flowing out of you and me.'' May we believe and act the same.
Prayer: Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
