Heeding the Call

Jesus speaks today about marriage and divorce, but He's also talking about vocation. God calls each of us, Jesus says -- to marriage, or not; to celibacy, or not. My responsibility is to accept that call, and live it faithfully. That's not easy. Simply hearing God's call in today's world is like trying to have an intimate conversation in a noisy, crowded room. Then, if I find a quiet place, and make the effort to listen, I may discover that the Lord is asking me for a sacrifice I frankly don't want to make. It's no wonder that I'm tempted to harden my heart.

I can be encouraged, though, by the assurance that my efforts to hear and accept God's call, and to live it faithfully, will be richly assisted by His grace.

Prayer: Speak to me, Lord. I'm listening, and I'm ready to accept Your call.
