Sing with joy to God our help.-- Psalm 81:2
Mass readings: Numbers 11:4-15 / Matthew 14:13-21
There's a word haunting today's Gospel, even though it doesn't appear. The word is enough. After the miracle of the loaves and fishes, the crowd has enough food; in fact, as the disciples discover, they have more than enough.
But we've heard Jesus talk about food before, and we know that the life He preaches requires more than bread and fish. Do I have enough? Do the people in my life have enough? Materially, compared to most of the world's people, we have much more than enough. But material comfort can distract us while we're starving spiritually. The food we need most to live the life we're called to live comes from prayer, Scripture, the Mass and the sacraments, and the love we give each other.
Prayer: Loving Savior, teach me to bring my spiritual hunger to Your table.
