St. Phillip Neri was born into a noble but poor Italian family in 1515, an unstable post-Renaissance culture. From an early age, Philip centered his life on daily prayer and the sacraments, spontaneously attracting others to join his service. Before becoming a well-known priest, adviser and founder of the religious institute known as the Oratory, Philip spent 13 years convening lay groups for prayer and discussion, an unusual vocation at the time. Like St. Paul in today's reading, Philip was a ''witness to the gospel of God's grace,'' becoming a prominent figure of the Counter-Reformation.
Philip is also well known for his humility and joyous sense of humor, reminding people that ''Cheerfulness strengthens the heart and makes us persevere in a good life. Therefore, the servant of God ought always to be in good spirits.''
Prayer: Help me, Lord, to become more human in seeking holiness.
