I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.--Psalm 116:9
Mass readings: Genesis 22:1-2,9,10-13,15-18 /Romans 8:31-34 / Mark 9:2-10
Behind me at Mass recently sat a Polynesian woman with three teenaged girls. When I turned round to offer them the Sign of Peace, two of the girls readily held out their hands and smiled. The third cast her eyes down and looked surly. But as I took her hand and said, ''Peace,'' she suddenly lifted her eyes and her face was transformed with a smile.
My sense of wonder at that young woman's ''transfiguration'' must have been only a dim reflection of what Peter, James and John felt when they saw the Jesus they thought they knew suddenly shining with inner light; but what a heartwarming experience for me. It brought home to me acutely how such a simple thing as a smile can change another person. The light of Christ does wonderful things.
Prayer: Lord, help me to be Your light shining on others.
