January 22, Thursday Weekday

Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.--Psalm 40:8 and 9

Mass readings: Hebrews 7:25-8:6 / Mark 3:7-12

Intercessions

We're told in today's first reading that Jesus ''lives forever to make intercession'' on our behalf. Today, on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we join Christ in making intercession on behalf of unborn children and their parents. We pray for a healing of the cultural mindset that encourages abortion as an easy alternative.

Let's also pray for protection against self-righteousness. It's easy for me to get smug and think, ''I would never . . . .'' Or ''There's no way I could possibly . . . . '' Maybe not, but I have done things I deeply regret. Time and again. The truth is we're all in need of a Savior. Thank God we have one, pleading for us to His Father and ours.

Prayer: Lord, have mercy.
