August 31, Twenty-Second Sunday Ordinary Time

My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.--Psalm 63:2

Mass readings: Jeremiah 20:7-9 / Romans 12:1-2 / Matthew 16:21-27

A Renewed Mind

Today's Gospel and second reading summarize several of the themes we've been reflecting on this month. In the Gospel, Jesus calls us to be His disciples and follow Him. We're to let go of our attachments to this world for the sake of the world to come. In the reading from Romans, St. Paul tells us that discipleship involves seeing things differently. ''Be transformed by the renewal of your mind,'' he says.

We're to be different. ''Do not conform yourselves to this age,'' says Paul. ''Take up your cross and follow me,'' says Jesus. We have renewed minds, we see with the eyes of faith, and we're called to do the work of Christ in the world. That's a mission with enough excitement for anyone.

Prayer: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I love You. I thank You. Be with me always.
